Topics and Speakers:Caring for Someone with Dementia – a PSW's Perspective Presented by Emy Almeida Emy's presentation will focus on sharing her perspective as a caregiver working with people with dementia. Creating Inclusive Environments for Aging LGBT Communities Presented by Heather Bain This interactive presentation will explore the impact of aging in LGBT communities and highlight best practices for working with LGBT seniors. Treating Alzheimer's Disease – Memory and Beyond Presented by Dr. Carmela Tartaglia Dr. Tartaglia will discuss the treatment of non-memory issues in Alzheimer's disease such as the behavioural and neuropsychiatric issues. In addition, Dr. Tartaglia will review some of the latest research on exercise as a therapeutic intervention in Alzheimer's disease. Music Care for People with Dementia Presented by Bev Foster (Breakout Session Option A) Music may be a remarkable intervention in dementia care. Participants will learn five practical ways they can use music to enhance connections for people with dementia. Living Safely at Home: Strategies for a Safer Environment Presented by Cara Macanuel (Breakout Session Option B) This session focuses on strategies to help promote a safer living environment. Topics covered include fall-prevention strategies, fire-prevention tips, and physical barriers and equipment suggestions with an emphasis on cognitive impairment considerations. Dance/Movement Therapy: Exploring Our Creative Selves Through Movement Presented by Andreah Baker (Breakout Session Option C) Dance/movement therapy is a person-centered holistic practice. It allows for the exploration of the connection between mind and body as a creative outlet for self-expression for clients with dementia. This presentation will use music and rhythm to help participants explore movement in a fun, engaging, and meaningful way. Caring for Someone with Dementia – a Caregiver's Perspective Presented by Joy E. Greenleese, MSW, RSW Joy's presentation will focus on sharing the experience of being a care provider for a person with Alzheimer's. |
