Treatment

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease and no treatment that will stop its progression. However, several medications are available that can help with some symptoms. These medications can slow down the decline of memory, language and thinking abilities.

Mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease

Three drugs are available in Canada to treat symptoms in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease -- Aricept™, Exelon™ and Reminyl™. All are cholinesterase inhibitors.

Moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease

Ebixa® (memantine hydrochloride) has been conditionally approved to treat symptoms in people with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. See the Drug Approval Process page for information on conditional approvals.

A number of clinical trials and research studies are underway in Canada and the U.S.
The Alzheimer Society of Canada provides a listing of these clinical trials and research studies External link - Alzheimer Society Canada, including those that are currently recruiting volunteers, as well as some that are closed to new volunteers or have been recently cancelled.
